    Causes

    Verified Expert

    • The exact cause is not fully understood.
    • Brain atrophy is seen in the cerebellum, Brain stem and the basal ganglia that regulate autonomic nervous system which control breathing, digestion and motor control.
    • A protein called alpha-synuclein has been found in the damaged Brain tissue. A prion form of this protein may cause the disease.

    Diagnosis

    Verified Expert
One or more of these tests may be recommended by your medical provider.
The doctor takes a medical history to evaluate the symptoms. Diagnosis is difficult because the symptoms overlap with that of other diseases.

    Common tests & procedures

Physical examination: To check for tremors and stiffness. Bladder and bowel functions are assessed by checking for reflexes such as cremasteric, anal wink, and bulbocavernosus reflexes.

Tilt table test: The patient is strapped to a tilt table which is then tilted vertically and blood pressure and heart rate are measured.

    Sweat test: To evaluate perspiration.

Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG): Assesses electric activity of the heart.

Sleep studies: To check for conditions such as sleep apnea.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): To look for brain atrophy and brain lesions.
